A Meeting Beneath the Surface
Imagine descending into the blue and suddenly seeing a shadow approaching from above. It grows larger with every second, until a manta ray glides overhead, its enormous fins moving effortlessly through the water.
For the diver, it can feel like meeting something from another world. But what happens from the other side of that encounter?
What does a manta ray actually see when it looks at a diver?
Although we can never know exactly what an animal experiences, scientists have learned a great deal about manta ray vision, behaviour and sensory abilities. Their view of the underwater world is shaped by eyes adapted to changing light, a brain capable of processing complex information and senses that help them understand their surroundings.
To a manta ray, a diver is more than a strange figure in fins and a mask. It is another moving presence entering its environment — one that may be unfamiliar, interesting or simply not worth worrying about.
Seeing the World in Blue
Underwater, vision works differently from the way it does on land. As sunlight travels through the ocean, different wavelengths of light disappear at different depths. Reds and oranges fade first, while blue wavelengths travel much farther.
Manta rays have eyes adapted to this underwater environment, allowing them to make use of the limited light available around them.
Their large eyes are positioned toward the front and sides of the head, giving them a broad field of vision. This is useful for an animal that spends much of its life moving through open water, where being able to monitor what is happening around it can be just as important as looking directly ahead.
So when a diver appears, the manta isn't seeing the same colourful scene that a diver sees through a mask.
The deeper the encounter, the more the surrounding world becomes dominated by shades of blue and changing patterns of light and shadow.
A Diver Is a Shape in Motion
One of the most fascinating parts of a manta encounter is how calm the animal can appear.
A manta ray may approach a diver, circle around them or glide overhead before disappearing into the blue. It can seem almost as though the animal is deliberately observing its human visitor.
There is a good reason this impression exists.
Manta rays are highly manoeuvrable animals, and their large pectoral fins allow them to make controlled movements through the water. Their vision helps them detect objects and movement within their surroundings, while their other senses provide additional information.
A diver therefore becomes part of the manta's visual environment — a relatively large, moving shape that behaves very differently from the fish and other animals the ray normally encounters.
The manta doesn't need to understand what a diver is in human terms. It simply needs to process the presence of something unusual in its environment.
Curiosity Beneath the Waves
Manta rays are often described as curious, particularly when they encounter divers. Some individuals may approach closely and remain nearby, while others may keep their distance.
This variation is important.
A close encounter does not necessarily mean the manta wants to interact with a diver in the same way humans interact with one another. Instead, it may be investigating an unfamiliar object or simply responding to something that has entered its normal environment.
For the diver, however, the experience can feel remarkably personal.
A manta may turn slightly as it passes, change direction or make another approach. When its enormous eyes appear to meet yours, it is easy to imagine a moment of recognition.
Perhaps the most honest interpretation is simpler: the animal has noticed you.
And beneath the surface, being noticed by a creature this large can be an unforgettable experience.
More Than Just Eyes
A manta ray's understanding of its environment doesn't depend on vision alone.
Like other marine animals, mantas live in a world filled with movement, pressure changes, vibrations and chemical signals. Their sensory systems allow them to gather information from their surroundings in ways humans cannot easily replicate.
Among their most remarkable sensory features are specialised electroreceptive organs known as the ampullae of Lorenzini. These structures allow rays and their relatives to detect weak electrical signals in the water.
Mantas also possess an extraordinary sense of their surroundings through their movement and awareness of water conditions.
This means that a diver isn't simply something the manta sees. The animal may also perceive the diver through other sensory information carried through the surrounding water.
For a species that spends its life in a constantly moving three-dimensional environment, combining different sources of information is essential.
What Does the Manta Think of the Diver?
This is where things become particularly interesting — and where we need to be careful.
We cannot ask a manta ray what it thinks, and scientists cannot directly translate its experience into human emotions or thoughts.
It is tempting to imagine that the manta sees a diver and thinks, What are you doing here?
The reality is likely far more complex.
The manta may recognise familiar individuals or locations, respond differently depending on circumstances and demonstrate behaviours that suggest sophisticated learning and memory. Researchers have also found evidence of impressive cognitive abilities in manta rays.
But whether a manta experiences an encounter as “curiosity,” “interest” or something entirely different is much harder to determine.
What we can say is that mantas are capable of responding to their surroundings in remarkably flexible ways.
And sometimes, they choose to come closer.
When a Giant Chooses to Approach
For divers, one of the most important lessons from manta encounters is that the animal should always control the interaction.
A manta that approaches a diver is choosing to enter that person's space. The diver should resist the temptation to chase, touch or block the animal.
Instead, the best encounter is often the simplest one: remain calm, give the manta room and allow it to decide where it wants to go.
This creates a fascinating reversal.
Humans spend enormous amounts of time trying to find manta rays. We travel to reefs, dive sites and remote islands hoping for a glimpse.
Yet when the moment finally arrives, the manta is the one deciding whether to come closer.
For a few seconds, the roles of explorer and observer can almost switch.
A Window Into Another World
Perhaps the most fascinating thing about wondering what a manta ray sees is that it reminds us how different the ocean can be from our own world.
We enter the water carrying equipment that allows us to breathe, see and move in an environment that isn't naturally ours. Manta rays don't need any of that. The ocean is their home, and they are perfectly adapted to it.
Their world is shaped by currents, light, depth, movement and vast distances.
When a manta looks toward a diver, we are essentially getting a glimpse of that world from the other side.
We may never know exactly what the animal sees or thinks. But we can appreciate the fact that, for that brief encounter, two very different explorers occupy the same stretch of blue.
Seen From the Other Side
A manta ray encounter is often described from the diver's perspective: the enormous wings, the graceful movement and the feeling of watching a giant glide effortlessly through the ocean.
But there is another side to the story.
From the manta's perspective, the diver is an unfamiliar presence moving through its environment — a shape that can be seen, sensed and investigated before disappearing into the blue.
And perhaps that uncertainty is what makes the encounter so special.
We enter the ocean hoping to see a manta ray.
For a fleeting moment, the manta ray may be looking back.
